An Original Copy of The Maiden Tribute of Modern Babylon, Reprinted from the Pall-Mall Gazette Circa 1880.
The Maiden Tribute of Modern Babylon was a landmark investigative series by journalist W. T. Stead, editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, published over five days in July 1885. The articles exposed the widespread exploitation of children in Victorian London and challenged the prevailing social complacency surrounding the issue. Written in a bold and sensational style, the series provoked intense public debate and moral outrage, ultimately contributing to significant legal and social reform. His work resulted in the William T Stead Act which raised the age of consent from 13 to 16.
