A Pair of Unique Medal to include a Bronze Tiffany & Co Life Saving Benevolent Association of New York Inscribed October 10th 1913. Also is a Silver Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society Medallion Awarded to Wm Pyne of the SS Rappahannock for Gallant Service 10th October 1913.
This pair of medallions commemorates the rescue efforts following the loss of the Volturno on 9–10 October 1913. While en route from Rotterdam to America with 93 crew members and 561 passengers aboard, the vessel caught fire during a full gale and heavy seas and was eventually abandoned. A total of 63 crew members and 458 passengers were saved, while 30 crew members and 103 passengers perished. In recognition of conspicuous courage displayed during the rescue operations, awards were made to members of the steamship Rappahannock, whose assistance contributed to the saving of lives during the disaster along with other vessels.
