The 1734 publication of these volumes was an important event, coming just over a century after the Bard's death. Interestingly, the final page of the present lot is an accusation that his competitor, Robert Walker, violated Tonson's copyright, having sold 'useless, pirated, and maimed Editions'. Tonson's successors, following his death in 1736, went on to publish several more editions, essentially bringing Shakespeare to Georgian England.
