An Exceptional 18th-Century English Verge pocket watch dial signed by Thomas Smith, in Gold Repoussé Pair Cases (Hallmarked 1735). A superb example of an 18th-century English verge, housed in fine gold repoussé pair cases. The full plate fire-gilt movement features square baluster pillars, a pierced and engraved balance cock, and matching pierced and engraved foot and plate for the silver regulator disc. Fusee and chain drive with worm and wheel barrel setup between two plates.
The watch has a signed champlevé dial displaying Roman and Arabic numerals, with blued steel beetle and poker hands. The plain inner case, possibly 20ct gold, is hallmarked for 1735. The richly decorated repoussé outer case depicts musicians in high detail. Previous service records or notes may be present inside the inner case.
Condition: Both cases in excellent condition, winds and ticks during period of observation
