Propelling us toward our 26th September auction

Propelling us toward our 26th September auction are two propelling pencils, early entries in the sale, one in gold (lot 103, est. £100-200) and one in silver (lot 287, est. £40-60). We had some excellent silver results in our 29th August auction in which 85% of our silver lots found buyers. (Our jewellery sell-through rate was even higher at 94%.) An attractive silver table box (lot 282), made in Birmingham in 1902, sold for £240 hammer, nearly two and a half times its low estimate. A silver and enamel vanity set (lot 285), assigned a low estimate of £100 as there was damage to the enamel, went for £650 hammer after lively bidding. Gold Sovereigns

The modern British gold sovereign coin has been struck by the Royal Mint since 1817 and was named for the coin first minted under King Henry VII in 1489 until 1603. Originally a coin intended to be circulated with a value of one pound sterling, it is now a bullion coin popular with collectors and investors. Half sovereigns were produced from 1817 to 1926 and were reintroduced in 1982. On offer in our 29th August auction are three full sovereigns, of Queen Victoria (1880), King Edward VII (1908) and King George V (1911), and two half sovereigns of Queen Elizabeth II (2012, 2014) with estimates ranging from £300 to £700.

Auction Highlights: Jewellery Do you have jewellery you'd like to sell? Check out some of our results from our 29th August auction. Our pre-sale estimates tend to be quite accurate, but occasionally sale results exceed our expectations, which is great for our consignors! A simple and elegant 18ct gold band (lot 28) with a low estimate of £120 sold for a hammer price of £320. Simplicity was trending again when a pair of diamond stud earrings (lot 83) came up. Spirited bidding took the diamonds beyond their £150 low estimate to a hammer price of £380. Top brands are always in demand. Bidding started just below the £50 low estimate for a Tiffany silver bracelet (lot 223) before the hammer came down at £160. Original World Cup 1966 Memorabilia

With interest in the England team and the 2026 World Cup reaching fever pitch, Willingham Auctions is reflecting back on the glorious victory of 1966. We're pleased to offer, in our 1st August auction, a collection of 1966 World Cup memorabilia which belonged to Harold Mayes. Mr Mayes served as Press and Publicity Officer for the Football Association and was an instrumental figure at the tournament. He wrote The Football Association World Cup Report 1966, published the following spring. The collection includes correspondence with other FA officials and international media outlets, a book of autographs he collected from players and managers during the games, souvenir programmes, cartoons, World Cup neckties and a wallet, an extremely rare group of nine official badges and ribbons, and a rare World Cup Willie horse brass.

An Exceptional 18th-Century English Verge pocket watch dial signed by Thomas Smith, in Gold Repoussé Pair Cases (Hallmarked 1735). A superb example of an 18th-century English verge, housed in fine gold repoussé pair cases. The full plate fire-gilt movement features square baluster pillars, a pierced and engraved balance cock, and matching pierced and engraved foot and plate for the silver regulator disc. Fusee and chain drive with worm and wheel barrel setup between two plates. The watch has a signed champlevé dial displaying Roman and Arabic numerals, with blued steel beetle and poker hands. The plain inner case, possibly 20ct gold, is hallmarked for 1735. The richly decorated repoussé outer case depicts musicians in high detail. Previous service records or notes may be present inside the inner case. Condition: Both cases in excellent condition, winds and ticks during period of observation Estimate £3000-£5000
